The Little Women Graphic Novel Project

My name is Dani Jones. I am a children’s book illustrator and comic creator. I am making a graphic novel based on Louisa May Alcott’s classic book Little Women. The goal of this web page is to share my thoughts and process as I create the book and get it published.

My aim is to create this book for a middle grade audience, around the ages of 8-12. Little Women is one of my favorite books, and I would love to introduce young audiences to it in hopes that they will come to love it as much as I do.

Who am I, and why should I draw this book?

Besides my love for Little Women, I am an experienced illustrator and comic artist. I’ve been published in several picture books, my most recent works having been both written and illustrated by myself and published by Stan Lee’s Kids Universe ( I have created and self-published several comic stories (e.g. and maintain a regular webcomic ( You can find out everything about me and my work at

Here’s some more sketches and concept art I’ve made over the years.

Why I Want To Make a Little Women Graphic Novel

In short, it is my favorite book. Ever. I have been in love with Little Women since I was a teenager. I have two sisters of my own, so I very much related to story of the March sisters and their various trials as they grew up.

One thing that has consistently irked me however, is how the book is marketed. This story is meant for young girls, yet the design of various adaptations continues to be dated, dull, and old-fashioned. Other beloved kid/teen stories like Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Pride & Prejudice, Lord of the Rings, and Treasure Island can be seen in beautifully produced books, comics, illustrations, blockbuster movies, parodies, cartoons, and merchandise. Little Women has not been utilized so greatly. It’s gotten a couple of good movie adaptations, the most recent of which is now over 15 years old; a tepid Broadway musical came and went; and while the book has been reprinted many times, most of the editions are quite frankly, boring to look at. Almost all of them look like they belong in an antique store.

What you might find in a bookstore today:

I think that it is a shame that Little Women hasn’t gotten as much attention over the years as other stories, which is why I want to make a graphic novel version that is fun, accessible, and attractive to kids (and distinguishing adults).

The Little Women Graphic Novel Project on Kickstarter

In August 2012, I attempted to fund the printing of a small book to collect a portion of my Little Women work and provide a collectible for my fellow LW fans. Alas, the book reached a respectable 89% of the funding goal, but not enough to print the book. However, you can still view the project with its fabulous feedback and wonderful backers. I still update the page with news if you’d like to follow it.

I love the idea – and the artwork so far. It’s great that the book is coming from someone with a real love for the original work. Can’t wait to see how this project grows!

  3. Jamie Forrest

I cannot express how excited this made me to see on Twitter this morning! Good luck and I will definitely be following along with your progress.

  4. Charmaine

This is such a great idea. Love your sample pages. I never read Little Women (like you said, it comes off as boring), so I’d be interested in a more appealing graphic novel treatment!

  5. Lori

Awesome! I’m a fan of the book (and Little Men and Jo’s Boys) — will watch this page. As I told you on G+, I dramatized the first 2 chapters for a Christmas show, and it was well-received. My young girls playing the roles of Beth and Amy both read the book and enjoyed it.

My fourth grade teacher read Little Women aloud to my class (along with other books like The Hobbit, and The Witch of Blackbird Pond, and many more), so it holds a special place in my heart. Looking forward to seeing it develop.

Excited to hear you’re starting a new project!
And I think you’ll do an excellent job with Little Women. Just in the small samples you’ve shown the kind of vibrant more youthful style that I think will be very well suited to what you’re trying to do. I haven’t read the book myself in years, but this will be awesome now for my own daughter in a couple of years. Look forward to following along with your progress!

Ever since I was in the 5th grade I’ve loved Little Women! And as much as I’ve tried to suggest the book to other people, they often shrug it off as an old classic that is too tedious to read. This project of yours is very exciting! I can’t wait to share it with friends, maybe then they’ll appreciate the story as much as I have! (:

I love this idea, Dani! I, too have always loved this book, and was so excited to go buy a copy for one of my young nieces. You are so right about how boring they looked! I was kind of let down that my excitement for the book probably didn’t translate to my niece after she saw the cover. You are perfect to bring this story back so this generation doesn’t miss out on a great story!!

I can’t WAIT to have the kickstarter campaign kick off and I can’t wait to pledge to it. I’m a huge fan of your work AND this book. The pages here are just fantastic! Rock Kickstarter with this!

  12. Scott

I’d love to have this in my house. My daughters (2 and 4) love comics and it would be great for me or my wife to read this to them.

  13. Tara Abbamondi

This looks fantastic! I seriously can not wait for this. Little Women was one of the first books I read as a kid, and I’m so glad you are doing this–it’s going to be awesome!

  14. Wendy

This is a terrific idea. I know a number of “stubborn readers” who shy away from books without pictures and love graphic novels. It’s the story that matters, not how it’s conveyed.

  15. Tanya

Marvelous! As I child I loved time-period stories, but only a few had the illustrative arwork that led me to them. The line and texture of your art adds an energy that existing books are lacking, yet isn’t so modern as to distract from the era of the story.

  16. Heather

These are really warm and wonderful drawings and I think you are the perfect artist to bring this story alive for the new generation of its readers. Good luck!

  17. Stephanie

I loved this book as a kid! I’m glad to see that people still love the classics! Can’t wait to see all the wonderful work on this project!

  18. Anna J. Boll

I love this idea and am a little shocked that it hasn’t been done yet. (Female author?) Your color and composition are just beautiful! (small crit comment, the large white dialogue bubbles are a little intrusive) Good luck, good luck, good luck!

  19. Ken Marciniak

Lookin’ good, Dani! Love the colors! Your artwork always has such warmth and personality! Good luck!

  20. NANA & BUMPA

We love it Dani, You are so talented!!! We’ll be anxious to get a copy. Best of Luck on this project.

  21. Tami

Your style is so perfect for this story. It was one of my favorites as a teen, as well. Best of luck on the project. I know you’ll do great!

  22. Aunt Kim

You’re right Dani, and you’re just the person for this project. Your artwork and ideas are truly amazing. Love this idea!!

    1. Alena

Good idea, but let’s wait until she’s done with this project to start begging and pleading. Don’t want her to get loaded down and quit.

  23. Anita

    It looks really great, Dani.
Hope you’ll get it published, and that your Kickstarter project will be a huge success!

  24. Leticia

  33. Erica

I’ve just discovered this today after reading a NPR article about crowd funding comics. I’m so sad I’m too late to back your kickstarter project. Little Women is also my favorite book ever so I do hope I’ll be able to purchase a hard copy of this book one day!

  34. Danica

I’m late to the party, but I’d love to see a Little Women graphic novel. I’m reading the original story to my 7 and 4 year olds right now and they are absolutely loving it. :)
