My name is Dani Jones. I am a children’s book illustrator and comic creator. I am making a graphic novel based on Louisa May Alcott’s classic book Little Women. The goal of this web page is to share my thoughts and process as I create the book and get it published.

My aim is to create this book for a middle grade audience, around the ages of 8-12. Little Women is one of my favorite books, and I would love to introduce young audiences to it in hopes that they will come to love it as much as I do.
Who am I, and why should I draw this book?
Besides my love for Little Women, I am an experienced illustrator and comic artist. I’ve been published in several picture books, my most recent works having been both written and illustrated by myself and published by Stan Lee’s Kids Universe (http://danidraws.com/monsters-vs-kittens). I have created and self-published several comic stories (e.g. http://www.frostythegourdman.com) and maintain a regular webcomic (http://www.mysisterthefreak.com). You can find out everything about me and my work at danidraws.com.

Why I Want To Make a Little Women Graphic Novel
In short, it is my favorite book. Ever. I have been in love with Little Women since I was a teenager. I have two sisters of my own, so I very much related to story of the March sisters and their various trials as they grew up.
One thing that has consistently irked me however, is how the book is marketed. This story is meant for young girls, yet the design of various adaptations continues to be dated, dull, and old-fashioned. Other beloved kid/teen stories like Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Pride & Prejudice, Lord of the Rings, and Treasure Island can be seen in beautifully produced books, comics, illustrations, blockbuster movies, parodies, cartoons, and merchandise. Little Women has not been utilized so greatly. It’s gotten a couple of good movie adaptations, the most recent of which is now over 15 years old; a tepid Broadway musical came and went; and while the book has been reprinted many times, most of the editions are quite frankly, boring to look at. Almost all of them look like they belong in an antique store.
I think that it is a shame that Little Women hasn’t gotten as much attention over the years as other stories, which is why I want to make a graphic novel version that is fun, accessible, and attractive to kids (and distinguishing adults).
The Little Women Graphic Novel Project on Kickstarter
In August 2012, I attempted to fund the printing of a small book to collect a portion of my Little Women work and provide a collectible for my fellow LW fans. Alas, the book reached a respectable 89% of the funding goal, but not enough to print the book. However, you can still view the project with its fabulous feedback and wonderful backers. I still update the page with news if you’d like to follow it.
