Little Women Watercolor Sketches and Ustream Recording

I held a live Ustream show yesterday to help promote my Little Women project. Thanks to all who stopped by! I ended up drawing and coloring two watercolor sketches, and gave one away to a lucky viewer at the end of the show.

You can watch the recording of the show here:

I will be holding one more broadcast before the Kickstarter campaign ends. It will be on Friday August 31 at 10 AM EST. I will be making more sketches and giving them away to viewers. Go to danidraws.com/danidrawslive to watch and chat.

Only a few more days left to pledge to the Little Women Graphic Novel Project! The project still needs more funding to reach its goal. I would appreciate any help you can provide to spread the word. Thanks so much!

Best,
Dani

Super 8 Sketch Card Process

When I’m not busy making children’s books or comics, I like to make sketch cards for fun, often featuring geeky fan art of my favorite TV or movie characters. (You can check out previous cards I’ve made here, here, and here.) I recently made a set of six cards featuring the gang of kids from the movie Super 8, which was my favorite movie of 2011 (probably one of my favorite movies ever actually). Anyway, I thought this would be a good opportunity to show a little process stuff.

Random Comic Art and Commissions

Here is a mish-mash of some recent sketches and paintings that I’ve been making for fun for various projects.

These are some original watercolor paintings featuring characters from my comic Frosty the Gourdman:

And also some smaller sketch cards, painted with gouache:

Some of this original artwork is available for sale here: http://store.danidraws.com/frosty-the-gourdman

I’ve also made some paintings featuring characters from my other comic, My Sister, the Freak.

The following paintings were made as donations for the UP! Fair. If you haven’t heard about the fair, it is a new convention/conference for independent comics creators and fans. It is taking place next month in Lexington, Kentucky. If you are anywhere near the vicinity, go check it out! Admission is free.

I packaged each painting with signed copies of issue 1. They will be auctioned off in support of the fair.

I also just finished a commissioned piece featuring MStF characters in Hawaii. Very fun! It was very Lilo-&-Stitch-ish.

And finally, these are a few sketch card commissions I made. They have nothing to do with my comics, but I’m a fan of the characters.

The cards are Chiana and Aeryn Sun from Farscape and Janet Fraiser from Stargate SG-1.

Mail Me Art

Mail Me Art 2

Darren Di Lieto, the guy behind the illustration news portal the Little Chimp Society and the portfolio site Hire An Illustrator! is currently running a project called Mail Me Art. In it, artists around the world draw and paint original art on envelopes or packages, and then send them directly to Darren through the mail. The image above is my contribution for it. It was drawn with ballpoint pen, watercolor, and white gesso on a 6″x9″ yellow envelope.

This is actually Darren’s second go-around for Mail Me Art. In its first year, the project resulted in the publication of the book Mail Me Art: Going Postal with the World’s Best Illustrators and Designers and an exhibition, held in London.
