Goin’ Gold Video

I was recently asked if I wanted to contribute a YouTube video to the Goin’ Gold Childhood Cancer Awareness Campaign. I was happy to oblige. Here it is:

About Goin’ Gold:

As you may or may not know (I personally didn’t, until this video), the gold ribbon represents childhood cancer, just as the more popular pink ribbon represents breast cancer. The goal of this campaign is to further promote the awareness of the gold ribbon and what it represents. More awareness = more attention, more research, and more funding which will help the many children fighting this awful disease. I am very much in favor of beating cancer to a pulp, especially where kids are involved.

So I am fighting my little fight by drawing this pirate. Who loves gold more than pirates? No one. Except maybe dragons. But I wanted to draw a pirate, so you get a pirate video today.

Please like, favorite, and share the video to help the Goin’ Gold cause. They’ve set up a whole YouTube channel of videos from a variety of sources. Check them all out if you have a moment!

Little Women Watercolor Sketches and Ustream Recording

I held a live Ustream show yesterday to help promote my Little Women project. Thanks to all who stopped by! I ended up drawing and coloring two watercolor sketches, and gave one away to a lucky viewer at the end of the show.

You can watch the recording of the show here:

I will be holding one more broadcast before the Kickstarter campaign ends. It will be on Friday August 31 at 10 AM EST. I will be making more sketches and giving them away to viewers. Go to danidraws.com/danidrawslive to watch and chat.

Only a few more days left to pledge to the Little Women Graphic Novel Project! The project still needs more funding to reach its goal. I would appreciate any help you can provide to spread the word. Thanks so much!

Best,
Dani

Womanthology Book Release

Womanthology, a HUGE anthology of comics written, drawn, and edited all by women, is going to be available very soon. I believe it will be in comic shops starting today and it is also up for order on Amazon.com. All proceeds from this book go to charity.

I received my copy in the mail yesterday. It is one ginormous book, and it is filled to the brim with comics, artwork, industry tips, and interviews.

I illustrated a four-page story for the book. It is called “Swimming” by Ashley Avard. It starts on page 180. I was really happy that I got to illustrate such a sweet and poignant story.

Doctor Who Christmas Carol Fan Art

This is a piece of fan art I made based on last year’s Doctor Who Christmas special, A Christmas Carol. I love this episode! It has quickly become one of my favorite things to watch around the holidays. I recently re-watched it, and I might have to do so again before the season is over. It is brilliant. Thanks Steven Moffat.

You can check out the entire painting process in the vid below. It was done in Photoshop. Actual painting time was around four hours.

Photoshop: Textures and Brushes

Psbrushdemo

I recently dedicated a couple Ustream shows to Photoshop brushes and textures. I love to take questions and chat during my shows, but these two episodes are the only broadcasts where I set out to actually teach specific lessons. So, I am putting them here in a blog post so they are easy to find and access.

Forgive my mumbling and bumbling; I don’t speak as well as I write. But these live shows were great because the viewers asked some really good questions that I wouldn’t have been able to think of on my own. I hope you find them extra informative to the stuff I’ve already posted here on the blog.

If you have a question or suggestion for a future Ustream lesson, go ahead and send me a note. I will post any plans for special broadcasts on the Dani Draws Live page (or you can keep track of me on Twitter). Please stop by next time and have your questions ready!

Mail Me Art

Mail Me Art 2
logo-mma

Darren Di Lieto, the guy behind the illustration news portal the Little Chimp Society and the portfolio site Hire An Illustrator! is currently running a project called Mail Me Art. In it, artists around the world draw and paint original art on envelopes or packages, and then send them directly to Darren through the mail. The image above is my contribution for it. It was drawn with ballpoint pen, watercolor, and white gesso on a 6″x9″ yellow envelope.

This is actually Darren’s second go-around for Mail Me Art. In its first year, the project resulted in the publication of the book Mail Me Art: Going Postal with the World’s Best Illustrators and Designers and an exhibition, held in London.

This is one of my Daily Doodles that I drew during an episode of my Ustream show. Created with ballpoint pen and watercolor.

This is a good example of the kinds of sketches I make on my Ustream broadcast. The show is currently on break, but returns soon on July 20 at 7PM ET. Come by and chat!

Video #16: Sailor Sketch

Video: Sailor Sketch (Quicktime, 1:18, 157 KB)

Here is a bit of a quickie sketch that I made a few weeks ago. It is pretty straightforward, but it is significant because I created this painting during a live broadcast at Ustream.tv. The site enables you to create live video streams that users can interact with through chat. I am still experimenting with it, but if you have suggestions or have had experience with this service before, I would be happy to hear any comments you may have! Hopefully, I will have more Ustream experiments to share soon.
