Year-In-Review: 2012

I can’t believe 2012 is almost over! I’ve been thinking a lot about how the year has gone, what I’ve accomplished, and where I’m going as 2013 approaches. It’s been a year filled with both failures and successes. I thought a large post in honor of 2012 would be fun and informative, while also helping me map out my goals for the coming year. I might have to make this a tradition (if I even remember to do this next December!).

So here we go…

Notable Events

I got a Cintiq!

In the very beginning of January, my Cintiq arrived. After a year of using it, it’s still pretty great. Read my review here.

I drew on my iPad. A lot.

With my heavy Cintiq pretty much stuck on my desk, I decided this year to use my iPad more heavily for artwork on-the-go. I thought I would be limited to sketches and roughs, but with a little time, I am now making full illustrations on my iPad and I’ve really gotten to love it.

I also got my Jot Touch this year, and it’s pretty much the perfect stylus. Love it!

And all of this led to one of my biggest projects this year – a book! I spent a good part of the year writing iPad For Artists, an instructional book about drawing on the iPad. Check it out!

The Return of My Sister the Freak

I made some good headway with my webcomic, including the spinoff The Adventures of Captain Bacon. I also finished the first chapter of Volume 2, and I’m looking forward to sharing more in the coming year.

The Little Women Graphic Novel Project

I jump-started a project that has been in the back of my mind ever since the beginning of my career – a graphic novelization of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. I launched a Kickstarter in August to try to fund a printed book, but fell short by mere dollars. But no matter, the project is still moving forward, just at a slower pace. I was able to complete one short sample chapter, which I posted for Christmas. Hope you get a chance to read it! I was very pleased with how it turned out, and hope to complete some more Little Women in the coming year.

Fun Stuff

Favorite Movies:

I think this was the year-of-the-animated-movie because holy cow, were there some good ones. The biggest surprise for me was Rise of the Guardians; I wasn’t very impressed by the trailers, but I went to the theater on a whim to see it, and it is easily one of my favorites of 2012.

There were a few high-profile disappointments for me (Skyfall, John Carter), and lots of great movies I liked (Hunger Games, Perks of Being a Wallflower, Hobbit, Les Miserables). These are ultimately what I picked for my top 5:

  1. Wreck-It Ralph
  2. Rise of the Guardians
  3. Avengers
  4. Dark Knight Rises
  5. Paranorman

Favorite Books:

All my favorite books this year are graphic novels. It seems to be all I read lately. These were all excellent and you should check them out. I’d have to say my most pleasant and surprising find was Bird & Squirrel because I laughed through the entire thing and loved the characters.

  1. Bird & Squirrel by James Burks
  2. Drama by Raina Telgemeier
  3. Amulet 5 by Kazu Kibuishi
  4. Friends With Boys by Faith Erin Hicks
  5. A Wrinkle in Time by Hope Larson

Up Ahead for 2013

iPad For Artists

My book iPad For Artists is officially released in the beginning of January!

Monsters Vs. Kittens / Once Upon A Time / SLKU

I have also received word that Stan Lee’s Kids Universe, the new publisher that is publishing my first two children’s books, will be launching on February 2! They will be releasing both of my titles, Monsters Vs. Kittens and Once Upon A Time!

My Sister the Freak Continues

My webcomic went on a bit of a break for the holidays, but I hope to start it back up soon and continue Volume 2. Check out the website to stay up to date!

Lots of other things I can’t tell you about!

2013 is already looking like it’s going to be a busy year for me. I am working on new types of projects that I haven’t done before in my illustration career, which is very exciting.

Here’s to a year of growth, accomplishment, and productivity. See you in 2013!
