Book of the Month: Making Comics

This book is several years old and tons of artists and websites have recommended it already, but I’m going to put in my two cents anyway in case you happened to have missed this gem.

Making Comics by Scott McCloud is just what the title suggests – a book about making comics. What makes this book especially fun is that entire book is written and drawn in a comic format.

Even if you’re not interested in drawing comics, it still has a lot to offer about storytelling and basic art principles. Any illustrator can learn a ton from this book. McCloud explains all the topics simply, yet interestingly, and includes different exercises and techniques to help the reader absorb the concepts along the way.

You can get a good idea of the format of the book on Scott’s website where he has posted a small sample, called Chapter 5 1/2. It expands upon Chapter 5 in his book “Tools, Techniques, and Technology”. It includes a tutorial and notes that cover optimizing color art for the web.

Thank you Dani for telling me about this book. I hadn’t really heard of this book until now but, I do have one of his other books on creating comics. A year or so ago I bought “Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art” at a Borders Books and Music store for a dollar. I might pick this newer title up someday soon. Right now, I’m waiting on a couple of Daniel Torres comic books that were serialized back in the eighties within the pages of Heavy Metal magazine. He’s a Spanish comic book artist and his work is great. I might post some art from the books online after I read the graphic novels. If anyone knows where I can find some European comic art pages to download I’d really appreciate it. Any of the following artists will be a great help to me. Moebius – Air Tight Garage, the Schuiten Bros., Pepe Moreno – Generation Zero, and anything with Cobalt 60 created by the late Vaughn Bode and written/illustrated by his Mark Bode. Serialized in Epic Illustrated again back in the eighties. I thank anyone who can help me in advance.

I found this book at my local library and it was very well produced. I’m not into comics or comic illustration (yet) but it got me thinking of at least trying out the art of it. I highly recommended it to anyone interested in comic illustration or even experimenting with different art forms (hint, hint: art students).
    Thanks Dani for the review.
